Resolving Calling/Quality Issues with a Router
Symptoms:
If your Lingo adapter is placed behind a router or a combined modem/router, you may experience problems with your Lingo service. Some
of these problems include:
- VoIP light goes out intermittently or constantly.
- When making outbound calls you hear a busy signal even though the person you are calling hears a ring.
- Incoming calls go directly to voicemail without ringing your Lingo phone.
- You hear a busy signal in the middle of the call.
- Your calls have a maximum duration of exactly 10 minutes.
- You experience quality issues such as choppy conversation or one person can't hear the other.
Resolution:
These issues are often due to your router's firewall (also known as NAT) blocking certain operations of the Lingo adapter. Try the
following solutions to resolve the issues.
For standard routers:
- The best solution is to connect your Lingo adapter directly to your broadband modem and then connect the router to the Lingo device.
This will allow the Lingo adapter to function without the firewall blocking it and prioritize your voice traffic over your data traffic,
thus providing you with greater consistency of call quality.

- Upgrade the firmware (firmware is similar to software) on the router. For detailed
instructions consult your router's user guide, the manufacturer's web site or contact Lingo
Customer Care.
- If you must keep your router in front of the Lingo adapter, you can enable the DMZ
option on your router which will open the firewall for one specific host. To determine the IP
address or host to enable DMZ for, you will need to login to your router and look at the
devices connected to it. From there you can get the internal IP address or host information
that it has assigned to Lingo.
For detailed instructions consult your router's user guide, the manufacturer's web site or contack Lingo Customer Care.
For combined
modem/routers: - Upgrade the firmware (firmware is similar to software) on the
router. For detailed instructions consult your modem/router's user guide, the manufacturer's
web site or contact Lingo Customer Care.
- Enable the DMZ option on your modem/router which will open the firewall for one specific host. To determine the IP address or host
to enable DMZ for, you will need to login to your modem/router and look at the devices connected to it. From there you can get the
internal IP address or host information that it has assigned to Lingo.
For detailed instructions consult your modem/router's user guide, the manufacturer's web site or contact Lingo Customer Care.
- Set the modem to Bridge Mode (important note: this turns the routing
capabilities
off). For detailed instructions consult your modem/router's user guide, the manufacturer's
web site or contact Lingo Customer Care.
