Universal Phone Numbers FAQ

What is a Universal Phone Number?
With your Lingo Voice over IP service, you can select the
option to have a Universal Telephone Number, or a number without
geographic boundaries. This phone number is your permanent
phone number and will work wherever you set up your Lingo
Voice over IP service - allowing you to make and receive phone
calls almost anywhere in the world. Lingo has phone numbers
available across the United States and in several international
countries.
All Lingo phone numbers are Universal Numbers. Lingo allows customers
to choose a number in their own area code, in another state
and even outside the country! Depending on the number you
choose, your friends and family in the US or other countries
can call you at local charges.
How do I Get a Universal Number?
All Lingo numbers are Universal Numbers. When you first sign
up for Lingo Voice over IP, you choose a primary Universal Phone Number
from your local area code, any where in the US, or in 13 other
international countries. You can add a second Universal Phone
Number once your Voice over IP account is fully activated (when you receive
your Lingo start-up kit). Simply go to Lingo Online Account
Management, select My Plan, and then Universal Number to order.
How do Universal Numbers Work?
Your Lingo Voice over IP service routes all calls to your Universal Numbers
to the same Lingo phone line. This means you can use the same
phone for both numbers. Plus, you can set up distinctive rings
via your online account management tool that will let you
know which number is ringing.
How do I dial calls from my Lingo
phone?
Lingo offers 7 digit dialing, which means you only need to
dial 7 digits to call numbers within your area code. For long
distance calls you simply dial 10 digits (area code + phone
number). We know it’s hard to break old habits though, so if
you’re used to 10 or 11 digit dialing, you can keep on doing
it without making any changes to your Lingo Voice over IP service.
How to make phone calls if your primary Lingo phone number is US/Canada:
- Within the same area code (as your primary number): Phone
number (Ex: 444-4444)
- Outside the area code (of your primary number): Area
code + phone number (Ex: 513 + 444-4444)
- International: 011 + country code + phone number
(Ex: 011 + 44 + 207-669-6000)
- Lingo voicemail: 1111
- Directory assistance: 411 or
1 + area code + 555-1212
- Emergency services: 911
How to make phone calls if your primary Lingo phone number is International:
- All calls to US/Canada: 1 + area code + phone
number (Ex: 1 + 513 + 444-4444)
- All international calls: 011 + country code +
phone number (Ex: 011 + 44 + 207-669-6000)
- Lingo voicemail: 1111
- Directory assistance: 411 or
1 + area code + 555-1212
- Emergency services: 911
How many Universal Numbers can I
have?

of these numbers can have a distinctive ring.
Is there a fee to add a phone number to my Lingo Voice over IP phone Service?
No. There is no service fee to add a number to your Lingo service. The normal monthly fee for a second number will apply.
How do I remove a phone number from my Lingo Voice over IP Service?
The easiest way to remove the phone number is to login to
your account at Lingo.com,
choose My Plan from the menu on the left side and then click
Universal Number. The phone number will be removed from your
Lingo account immediately and you will not be able to recover
it.
Is there a fee to remove a phone number from my Lingo internet phone service?
You can delete up to three phone numbers from your Lingo account at no charge. After you have removed three numbers there will be a one time service fee of $5.95 each time you remove a phone number. This fee will appear on the next invoice after you remove the number.
Can I have an international Universal
Number?
Yes. You can choose a number in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada,
Guatemala, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Spain, United States, and the United Kingdom as either your primary
or secondary phone number.
Can I have an international universal number as my primary phone number?
Yes, you may choose an international number for your primary phone number. The monthly fee will apply just like any international number. If you do have an international phone number as your primary number your Emergency Calling Service phone calls will be routed to a nationwide center instead of your local Public Safety Answering Point. As always, it is important to be prepared to provide your physical address and a U.S. phone number where the operator can reach you when dialing 911. For more details refer to the Lingo Terms and Conditions.
What phone number do my outgoing calls
come from?
When you make a call from your Lingo Voice over IP line, your primary phone number is the number that calls come from. If you call someone with a caller ID display, the primary phone number is the number that they will see. To change which Lingo phone number is primary: Login to your account by clicking Login from the upper right corner of the screen, choose My Plan from the menu on the left side and then click Universal Number. Click the radio button next to the number you want to designate as primary.
When I choose a Universal Phone
Number, will calls that I make to that regional calling area
be local calls?
With Lingo Voice over IP phone service, the concept of local calling
doesn’t really matter like regular phone service. The important
part is whether the area you are calling is included in the
subscription plan, not where it’s physically located. For
people with traditional phone service who call your Lingo
number, the important part is whether the number they are
dialing is in their “rate center” or local calling area.
Example 1: You have the Lingo Unlimited plan and live in New
York City, but your Universal Number has a San Diego (619)
area code. Your calls to anywhere in the US are included because
you are on the Unlimited Plan. Any person in the same 619
calling area who calls you is only charged for a local call.
Example 2: You have the Lingo Unlimited plan with a primary
Universal Number from Los Angeles and a second Universal Number
from Tokyo. People from Tokyo who call your Tokyo Lingo number
will not pay international fees. Your calls to Tokyo will
be charged per minute as that country is not included in the
Unlimited Plan.
What countries are available for
Lingo Voice over IP Service?
Lingo offers Universal Phone Numbers from Argentina, Australia, Brazil,
Canada, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Panama, Puerto
Rico, South Korea, Spain, United States, and the United Kingdom. You can call
any number in the world using Lingo Voice over IP (per minute charges apply
if the country is not included in your plan). You can also
use your Lingo line in another country; simply take your Lingo
phone adaptor with you and connect to any analog phone and
high-speed Internet connection.
I live in one of the countries where
you offer international phone numbers. Can I sign up for Lingo?
At this time, Lingo Voice over IP service is only shipped within the US.
Many of our customers order the service for friends and family
and ship the start up kit overseas once they receive it. Be
sure to review the Lingo terms and conditions to understand
the customer’s rights and responsibilities if they choose
to do this.
Will Lingo be expanding the choices
of international phone numbers in the future?
Yes. Lingo Voice over IP service is adding new countries all the time.
How do people in the country of
my international phone number dial me?
People in the country of your international phone number dial
your international phone number the same way they would dial
any other number in their country. There is no need to dial
international dialing codes or country codes.
How do people outside the country
of my international phone number dial me?
People outside the country of your international phone number
dial you the same way they would dial any international phone
number, including dialing international dialing codes and
country codes.
Is Emergency Calling Service (911
dialing) available if I have an international phone number?
Yes. Dialing 911 will work if you have an international phone
number. As always, it is important to be prepared to provide
your physical address and a U.S. phone number where the operator
can reach you when dialing 911. Emergency Response services
are only available if you are physically located in the United
States when you dial 911. For more details refer to the Lingo
Terms and Conditions.
