Equipment & Connections FAQ

My PC only has a USB connection.
Will the Phone Adaptor fit into my network?
In order to use Lingo, you will need to switch your
broadband Internet connection from USB to Ethernet. To do
this, purchase a USB to Ethernet adaptor or install an Ethernet
card in your computer.
Can I use Lingo if I have a DSL USB
modem?
No. Currently USB interfaces are not compatible with the Lingo
device. You must have an Ethernet compatible modem.
What is a Cable Modem?
A cable modem is a device designed to provide high-speed Internet
access through existing cable television lines. If you have
high-speed Internet access through your cable provider they
will most likely provide this when you sign up.
What connections will Lingo work
with?
Lingo is compatible with high-speed Internet services such
as DSL or Cable. Satellite Internet connections are not usually
recommended for use due to inconsistent connection quality which can affect the audio quality of digital phone calls.
What do I need to get service with Lingo?
In order to use Lingo service, you will need the following:
- A broadband high-speed Internet service such as: DSL or Cable.
- A credit card with US billing and shipping address.
- Telephone Adaptor that is provided and will be shipped to you by Lingo.
- A touchtone phone
Will Lingo service work with
my Satellite Internet connection?
Lingo service generally works with Satellite Internet connections.
There may be some speed issues that are inherent to satellite
connections or line of sight issues that could affect audio
quality when making calls with Lingo. Lingo requires 90 kbps
of consistent upload/download speed to make and receive
calls.
Do I need a computer to use Lingo?
No. The Lingo phone adaptor that we provide you will connect
directly to your broadband modem.
Can I use my computer and talk on
the phone at the same time?
Yes. Lingo works independently of your computer, so you can
make and receive calls while surfing the web.
Do I need a router?
A router is needed only if you are using multiple computers
and/or networking devices with Lingo.
I already have a network in my home.
Will I be able to use Lingo with my existing networking equipment?
Yes, Lingo will integrate with most home networks very easily.
See our installation guide for details.
Will my integrated Cable/DSL modem
and router work with Lingo?
Yes, as long as it is Ethernet or 802.3 compatible it will
work with Lingo.
Are you Mac compatible?
Yes, Lingo works with the Mac operating system.
Can I use multiple phones with Lingo?
Yes, there are a number of ways to use multiple phones with
Lingo.
- Multiple jack connector: For phones in the same room,
we recommend the use of a standard telephone line splitter.
Use the type that is on the end of a phone wire instead
of the type designed to plug into a wall jack as the latter
may interfere with the Lingo adaptor’s power cord. We do
not recommend connecting more than two phones in this manner.
- Expandable cordless phone: For phones in multiple rooms,
we recommend the use of a multi-handset cordless phone system.
Connect the base unit of the phone system into the Phone
1 port on the Lingo adaptor.
- Wireless phone jack – Another multi-room option is a wireless
phone jack system. These consist of a transmitter that you
plug into the Lingo adaptor, and receivers that are placed
throughout the home wherever there is a standard power outlet.
Note that preliminary testing shows these devices may not
be compatible with some Lingo features. For example, Caller
ID information may not display on remote phones.
Will Lingo work with my TiVo / DirecTV
/ Dish Network device?
In most cases the Lingo device can place calls for these devices.
However, please note that we only support the use of the Lingo
service for voice and fax calls and do not guarantee that
these calls will complete at all times. Visit our
DVR troubleshooting guide for more information about how
to use these systems with Lingo digital phone service.
Will Lingo work with my home security
system?
We strongly recommend you consult your security provider before
attempting to connect any security service (or other emergency
response service) to Lingo. Please remember that we only support
the use of the Lingo service for voice and fax calls.
Can Lingo work with my existing
home phone wires?
Plugging your Lingo box into a phone line with an existing
connection to your local phone company may cause irreparable
damage that is not covered by our warranty or terms and conditions.
If you attempt to use your Lingo device in this manner, we
strongly recommend you contact a qualified telephone technician
or electrician to verify that there is no voltage on your
home wiring.
Can I use an IP phone or telephone
adaptor that I purchased from another supplier?
No. At this time Lingo will only operate with the phone adaptor
that we provide when you sign up.
Is there a software version of Lingo
I can use on my computer?
No. At this time, Lingo is not offering Voice over IP (VoIP) software.
Can I use another company's software
phone?
No. The Lingo service does not allow for the use of third-party
Voice over IP software.
Will my Lingo phone adaptor work
when I travel?
Yes, you can use your Lingo service any place there is a broadband
Internet connection such as DSL
or cable. People from your local calling
area who need to reach you will be making local calls to your
Lingo line even if you are out of town or outside the country.
If you plan on using the service outside the U.S.,
we suggest checking with local Internet Service Providers
(including hotels, internet cafes, etc) to see if there are
any regulations on using Voice over IP service in that specific area.
Due to certain restrictions of Internet Service Providers
outside of the U.S. and Canada, we cannot guarantee the quality
of the Lingo service. If you use Lingo in another country,
even if you have a Lingo international phone number, you
will pay our international rates to call within that country.
See our international
rate calculator for our current rates.
Who manufactures the Lingo telephone
adaptor?
The Lingo adaptor is a proprietary Primus product. Primus
uses a private vendor for the development and manufacturing
of the Lingo device. This allows us to provide functionality
that matches the special requirements for Lingo service not
offered by our competitors.
Does Primus use different manufacturers for the Lingo telephone adaptor?
From time to time Primus may change the appearance of the Lingo adaptor or use a different manufacturer. These changes in no way affect our commitment to providing you with the highest quality service and latest features. All of our adaptors receive software updates remotely so you will always have the latest Lingo features and technology on any adaptor that we have used.
Is my adaptor still supported?
Absolutely! Changes to the Lingo hardware do not impact any of our previous or current devices. We will continue to provide our newest features, technology and support for all customers, no matter what Lingo equipment you have.
Can I exchange my Lingo telephone adaptor for a newer one?
No, you cannot exchange the Lingo telephone adaptor. Any changes to the appearance or manufacturer of the Lingo adaptor do not mean that your adaptor is in any way inferior. And, we use a remote software update system to ensure that all adaptors have the latest technology and features.
