Using TiVo®, ReplayTV®, or a DVR with Lingo

Symptoms:

You have connected your DVR, TiVo® or ReplayTV® to your Lingo phone line and the daily calls are not successful or you are not getting program information. These devices use a modem, which normally connects to a phone line. Most DVRs can be made to work with Lingo by following these instructions and a little help from the manufacturers technical support department.

Resolution:

TiVo®

Note: TiVo does not officially support use of a Voice over IP phone line, such as Lingo, for setup or the daily phone calls. Lingo customers have had success with these resolutions, but TiVo is not likely to provide assistance if you encounter issues.

  1. If you have a TiVo Series2 stand-alone DVR you can make daily calls using your broadband internet connection. This option is not available on TiVo for DirecTV. Click here for an article from the TiVo web site that explains how to connect your TiVo to a home network.
  2. TiVo is normally set to a high line speed, too high for Voice over IP phone adapters. TiVo's speed can be reduced by changing the dialing pattern. To change the dialing speed:
    1. Software versions 3.0 - 3.2: From TiVo Central, select Messages & Setup; then Recorder & Phone Setup; then Phone Connection; then Change Dialing Options.
    2. Software version 4.0 and later: From TiVo Central, select Messages & Setup; then Settings; then Phone & Network Setup; then Edit phone or network settings; then Phone Dialing Options.
    3. Change the Set Dial Prefix setting to “,#034” (type in comma pound zero three four, do not type the quotation marks). This will set the modem speed to 28.8. If this does not work try “,#096”. This will set the modem speed to 9600 baud.

ReplayTV®

  1. Most ReplayTV models have a built in Ethernet connection and you can connect the device to your broadband internet connection. Use the following articles on the ReplayTV web site for instructions:

    Connecting to your cable modem

    Connecting to your DSL modem

    Connecting to your wireless network

  2. ReplayTV is normally set to a high line speed, too high for Voice over IP phone adapters. ReplayTV's speed can be reduced by changing the dialing pattern. Click here for instructions from ReplayTV to change the dialing speed. The recommended speed with the Lingo adapter is 9600 or 14.4.

Other DVRs

  1. Consult the user manual for your device or contact the manufacturer to determine if you can connect the device directly to your broadband internet connection.
  2. DVRs are normally set to a high line speed, too high for Voice over IP phone adapters. The recommended speed with the Lingo adapter is 9600 or 14.4. Consult the user manual for your device or contact the manufacturer for instructions to reduce the line speed.
